Rocky Knob Recreational Area
Just north of Meadows of Dan Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway lies the Rocky Knob recreational area. It contains close to 4,300 acres and almost 15 miles of hiking trails, has a visitors center along with a family campground. The Rocky Knob campground which is located at milepost 161 has several spaces for camping and RV parking with more primitive camping locations down at the bottom of the Rock Castle Gorge which is located right on the Rock Castle Gorge National hiking trail.
If your looking to picnic, the campground also has over 70 picnic tables, restrooms, a phone and picnic shelters. There are Four local area hikes, Rock castle gorge, Black ridge, Round meadow creek and Rocky knob picnic area trails ranging from over 10 miles to less than one mile in length.
Rock Castle Gorge National Recreational Trail
This is the longest, most popular and not surprisingly most strenuous trail located at Rocky Knob. It is almost 11 miles long and consists of beautiful views, steep narrow cliffs, rolling pastures and miles of crystal clear streams. There is abundant wildlife to be seen such as Whitetail deer, squirrels, cows and even Black bear.! This trail is definitely not for the faint of heart and I would highly recommend that you be in pretty good hiking shape before attempting this fun hike.
